Ultimate started as a blood sport...

Only a few people know the real story behind the game... Forget the hippy stuff, Ultimate Frisbee was developed around 300 A.D. in the Aztec province of Yucatan, near the city of Palenque. Ultimate Frisbee (in the Aztec Ul-ta-kool Fusz-bah, literally "gliding death wheel") was used both as a form of entertainment and to settle minor land or mineral rights disputes between Aztec tribes. The teams were typically comprised of slaves, widows, and orphans who played for pitchers of Ouaxchica, a sweet and refreshing Aztec rice drink.

The Aztec kings immediately recognized this peasant sport as a golden opportunity to ruin something good by making it a blood-sport. The "frisbee" was soon serrated and made razor-sharp; the losing team was fed to wild dogs, who were then drowned in lakes, which were then drained; and the frisbee fields were littered with small pieces of metal, chunks of diseased flesh, and swarms of killer bees. These innovations were undone in the 19th century by Lord Shelby Darrow, a noted Aztecologist, who is considered the father of modern Ultimate Frisbee, the step-father of Competitive Shuffleboard and the dead-beat dad of Ultimate Darts.

Vaccinations and Visa's for WCBU?

The Scottish team found that vaccinations for Yellow Fever and Polio are recommended when traveling to Brazil, however they are not required. Vaccination is country specific. Players might want to ask the Brazilian consulate about this. When you contact the consulate, also check if you need any visa to go to Brazil.

Funky Beach Ultimate in the Ukraine

On August 11-12 there is the KaZantip Z(x)7 tournament that will happen during the annual open air rave-festival on the seaside in Popovka (near Evpatoriya, Crimea). The 5-week festival has over one million visitors, lots of dance parties, (extreme) sports, and now also Beach Ultimate :-)

With great games during the day, freestyle performances, a night-Ultimate demonstration, and more parties that you can handle it should make for an amazing atmosphere and tournament!

The weekend after (18-19 Aug) you could travel to Kiev and participate in the 6th edition of the Kiev Beach Ultimate tournament. This tournament enjoys a great beach in the middle of the city, lots of players and the occasional baby enjoying some beer.

FYI: Only African and Asian players need a visa to visit the Ukraine and if you need help getting tickets (bus/train) the organizers are more than willing to help you out.
