Disc game on the kitchen table

The long awaited, definitive GlaxoSmithKline video is here. After months of tiny video clips bouncing around the internet giving people a vague idea of how this new game involving a frisbee is played, GlaxoSmithKline - the game (which has nothing to do with the company) - the 3:15min video, in all it's wonderous glory is now available. See the current world record being set, be amazed by the special moves of the Mohawks (Mac, Tequila, Bob and Felchers), laugh at the GlaxoSmithScore, then lube your table up and start a GlaxoSmithJam of your own! New SOTG scoring system

Cap for SOTG winnersToday we launched a new Spirit of the Game scoring system that is much more objective than most systems, yet still has some subjective influences.

It started with the idea to use/adapt the Swedish Fair Play system that was promoted through the WFDF in 2004. However after several discussions within the BULA-Rules workgroup it was decided that this system was too subjective and we wanted to improve the SOTG rating system that originated by Fadi Hobeila and Christine Sura in Montreal (Canada).

Lorne Beckman (Canada), Rue Veitl (Germany), Raoni (Brazil), Tim Finan (USA), José Pires (France), Rahim Resad (Singapore), Filipa Bringel (Portugal), and I spent over a year discussing and improving the system so it could be used to create a worldwide Beach Ultimate Spirit of the Game rating standard.

Are we happy with it? Yes... for a beta version :-)

You will be the ones to tell us if this is a step in the right direction. We sent an email to all Beach Ultimate tournament directors and asked them to test it. In order to further improve the system we want (and need) feedback! Download the .pdf version below and send comments to sotg@beachultimate.org or leave them below.

In case you are wondering what the cap is all about... The symbol is the Chinese symbol for Spirit/Energy and Lookfly, the SOTG sponsors of the WCBU in Portugal in 2004, is so kind to offer this to Beach Ultimate tournament SOTG winners this year. So if you see someone with this cap, you know he/she is good company :-)

And now.... without further ado.... (drum roll).... The BULA Spirit of the Game rating system (version 1.06beta. Last update 26 February 2006)

If you need a free PDF reader, you can download it here.

Keep the Spirit. It is what makes this sport the Ultimate!

Special sports lens from Nike

nike_lens.jpgNike has teamed up with contact lens maker Bausch and Lomb to create performance-enhancing contact lenses called MaxSight. They're a tinted version of daily disposal lenses for athletes that reduce glare and improve visual acuity. The amber version is advertised to help people that play Soccer, Baseball, Tennis, Football, and Rugby. Will it help Beach Ultimate players as well? If you have tried this product, please leave a comment for the rest of us to know.

Port-a-Field lines

port-a-field.jpgTwo years ago, for the World Championships Beach Ultimate in Portugal, BULA purchased 10 fields from Port-a-Field. These fields have been used afterwards for all Portuguese championships, league days and tournaments and only one of them broke so far. The corners of the fields are a bit flimsy but the latest product (which we have not tested yet) seems to address this problem. We found the system very easy to use. With a bit of experience you can put a field up or take it down in 10 minutes. Storage is simple and does not take much space. The only issue is the price: $199 for a complete field. However if you play Beach Ultimate enough it is worth it.

2011: 3rd World Championships....

It just dawned on me... Since the World Championships will be held once every 4 years, the one after Brazil will only be in 2011... Hmmm, now there is an incentive to go to Brazil next year :-)

As if you need more incentives... BULA already started contact with many countries, including 'smaller' countries such as Jamaica, Mexico, Hong Kong, Morocco and Zimbabwe(!). Lots of interest. No commitment of course, but I have a feeling that it should be another interesting 'play hard party hard' World Championship with an international Latino flavor... In 2004 we had 23 nations represented. We are aiming for 4 more in 2007!
